Do electric cars require oil changes?

by Jaquan Green

If the vehicle is battery-operated, does it still require oil changes? This is an important question to consider for electric vehicle (EV) owners. The maintenance and service requirements of an EV’s motor differ significantly from that of an internal combustion engine (ICE) in a gas-powered vehicle.

An ICE motor has a significantly greater number of moving parts than an EV motor. Thus, motor oil is necessary to lubricate all its moving parts, allowing it to operate with minimal friction and prevent overheating and internal engine damage.
Interestingly, there appears to be little public interest in EV motors and their functioning. While the hottest topics around EVs are battery life and driving range, there is limited information available on EV motors and their maintenance. This lack of information might be because there are not many options to choose from when purchasing a new vehicle. It is not like buyers are picking between a V-8, V-6 Turbo, or four-cylinder engine for an EV.
However, there is one critical question to address: Do electric cars require oil changes? Continue reading to learn more.
Electric cars do not use oil to lubricate the motor’s moving components like traditional internal combustion engines do. This is because electric motors have fewer moving parts, including pistons, that need lubrication. In contrast, ICEs require motor oil and other fluids to cool, clean, and cushion the engine’s parts when running at high speeds.
Most electric motors in EVs use air cooling, but with the recent emergence of larger EV trucks that come with bigger, more powerful electric motors, liquid thermal-management cooling systems, which are separate from the battery, are becoming more prevalent. These closed-loop systems are designed to maintain consistent operating temperatures for the motor, regardless of the environment or driving conditions.
Some EV gearboxes require specific fluid for their transmissions. It is recommended to consult the owner’s manual to determine the suggested service intervals.
Do Electric Cars Require Oil Changes?
No, battery-powered EVs require less frequent and fewer services compared to fossil fuel-powered cars. By eliminating the need for motor oil and filter changes, overall costs of owning an EV are reduced. However, it should be noted that EVs are not maintenance-free. It is recommended to refer to the owner’s manual for other maintenance services unique to EVs.
