A recall has been issued for nearly 550,000 light truck tires manufactured by Michelin. Specifically, the tires affected by the recall are the Agilis CrossClimate C-Metric tires with Department of Transportation (DOT) numbers ranging from 0117 to 1423. These tires were marketed as snow tires, indicated by the presence of the Alpine Symbol; however, they do not meet the requirements for this classification. The Alpine Symbol is depicted by a snowflake inside a three-peaked mountain outline.
These tires are commonly found on various vehicle models, including Ford Transit, RAM ProMaster, Volkswagen Crafter, Nissan NV200, Chevrolet City Express, and Mercedes-Benz Sprinter.
Reasons for the Recall of Michelin Tires and How to Determine if Affected
Michelin has initiated the recall of these tires as they do not meet the safety standards set by the United States. The issue arose during initial tire testing, where incorrect tire pressure was used. Subsequent testing revealed the non-compliance with the required traction for snow tires, leading to the failure to meet federal regulations.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, although labeled as snow tires, these tires lack adequate traction for optimal performance in various snow weather conditions.
To determine if your tires are subject to the recall, check if you have Michelin snow tires featuring the Alpine Symbol, mounted on one of the listed vehicle models, and possessing DOT numbers within the range of 0117 to 1423. Tires meeting these criteria are likely to be affected.
