Each spark plug is threaded into a dedicated hole within the cylinder head. A robust wire, coupled with a fitting affixed to the spark plug’s end, facilitates the conveyance of the electric power essential for generating the concealed spark at the plug’s tip. The engine’s ignition system dispatches a surge of exceedingly high-voltage current through this wire and into the spark plug—typically ranging from 20,000 to 30,000 volts for a small engine. The plug’s tip resides within the combustion chamber of the engine, positioned within the cylinder head, and encompasses a minute gap. Upon encountering this gap, high-voltage electricity bridges the air space, effectively completing the circuit as it courses into the engine block. This phenomenon generates a visible spark that triggers ignition of the air/fuel mixture within the engine, enabling its operation.   • If the wire connection resists removal, gently rotate the rubber fitting while pulling.

Step 2: Test with a Spark Plug Tester

  • Connect a spark plug tester to the ignition wire’s other end, attaching it to the spark plug in the engine.
  • Turn the ignition ON and start the engine or turn it over (if starting is unsuccessful). Observe the tester’s transparent sides.
  • If no visible spark or glow is present, it indicates that no spark occurs at the spark plug’s essential tip. However, lack of spark doesn’t exclusively implicate a faulty plug; other ignition system issues could also be responsible.

Alternatively, Test without a Spark Plug Tester

  • Use a suitable spark plug wrench to remove the plug from the engine by rotating it counterclockwise.
  • Reconnect the ignition wire to the spark plug and position the plug to touch the engine cylinder head’s metallic part.
  • Turn the engine over and observe the tip’s gap. While the engine can’t run with the spark plug removed, a functional ignition system will display a visible blue spark arcing between the central electrode’s tip and the nearby curved metal top.

Step 3: Evaluate Results

  • Examine the removed spark plug’s tip for residue. A functional spark plug should exhibit a light gray or brown residue on the central electrode, free from oily or black deposits that might obstruct spark generation.
  • Replace the spark plug with a new one of the same type (standard plugs cost $5 to $8). If the new plug doesn’t resolve engine performance issues, the problem lies elsewhere in the ignition or fuel system, affirming that the spark plug isn’t the root cause.

Incorporating these steps into your troubleshooting routine allows you to effectively diagnose and address spark plug-related issues in small engines, facilitating optimal engine performance and functionality.
