If you are an owner of a Kia or Hyundai base model vehicle, you may qualify for financial restitution. Customers who own entry-level Hyundai or Kia vehicles manufactured between 2009 and 2022 have the opportunity to receive compensation. In response to the vulnerability of certain vehicle models to theft, Hyundai and Kia have reached a settlement, agreeing to pay an estimated sum of $200 million to affected customers.
The issue gained significant attention in 2021, triggered by viral TikTok videos that showcased how easily specific Hyundai and Kia cars could be stolen, particularly those lacking immobilizers or push-button ignitions. These videos demonstrated that resourceful thieves could gain unauthorized access to these vehicles using simple tools such as a slot screwdriver and a phone charging cable.
The alarming rise in car thefts, particularly in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where the initial videos emerged, has been attributed to this distressing trend. In early 2021, thefts of Kia and Hyundai cars in the region surged to a staggering 25 times the previous rate. Consequently, some insurance companies have been hesitant to provide coverage for certain Kia and Hyundai models due to the increased theft risk.
Reasons for Kia and Hyundai Settlement
The anticipated settlement amount of $200 million from Kia and Hyundai serves to provide compensation to eligible customers for the damages and losses incurred due to vehicle theft, which were not covered by insurance. Additionally, the funds aim to address the financial burden caused by higher insurance premiums and deductibles, reflecting the awareness among insurance providers regarding the susceptibility of these vehicles to theft.
As part of the settlement, a free automatic software update will be provided to enhance vehicle security, functioning similarly to a vehicle immobilizer that prevents movement in the absence of the key fob. In conjunction with this substantial payout, the automakers have implemented interim measures such as offering complimentary steering wheel locks and anti-theft kits.
