Tesla NACS Charger: Compatible EVs and Charging Networks to Look Forward to

by auto_motivex

Automakers with Tesla Agreements

Ford

Starting from spring 2024, Ford EV owners will have access to Tesla’s Supercharger network. Although the Ford F-150 Lightning and Mustang Mach-E currently feature a CCS-type charge port, an adapter will enable them to connect to Tesla’s fast chargers. By 2025, Ford plans to equip its new EVs with a standard NACS plug.

GM

General Motors (GM) was the second automaker to strike a deal with Tesla, adopting its charge port. GM EV owners will be able to utilize Tesla’s Superchargers beginning in 2024, using an adapter that enables their CCS ports to work with NACS. Starting in 2025, GM will make NACS standard across its EV lineup. The company also intends to provide adapters for NACS-equipped models to connect to CCS chargers.

Rivian

Following Ford and GM, Rivian has agreed to collaborate with Tesla. The R1T pickup truck and R1S SUV from Rivian will be equipped with NACS ports around 2025. An adapter for these models will be made available next year.

Mercedes-Benz

Mercedes-Benz became the first German automaker to announce its plans to adopt Tesla’s NACS charge port. Starting in 2025, Mercedes-Benz electric models will feature the NACS plug. Additionally, the company will offer an adapter for its CCS-equipped models by 2024, allowing customers to access Tesla’s Supercharger network. Mercedes-Benz also intends to establish its own charging network in North America, aiming to provide over 2500 fast chargers. The first of these chargers is expected to arrive in the last few months of this year and will be accessible to non-Mercedes EVs as well.

Polestar/Volvo

Polestar and Volvo, the Chinese-owned Swedish brands, are the first foreign automakers to collaborate with Tesla. Starting in 2025, both brands will standardize the NACS port across their EV lineup. Similar to other companies, an adapter will be offered in the first half or middle of next year to make their CCS ports compatible with Tesla’s Superchargers. Additionally, Polestar and Volvo will provide an NACS-to-CCS adapter for those who need to connect to non-Tesla chargers.

Automakers Reportedly In Talks with Tesla

Hyundai

Hyundai Motor Company, which includes the Kia and Genesis brands, is reportedly exploring the possibility of making its EVs compatible with the NACS port, as reported by Reuters. While the Korean automaker has expressed public interest, Hyundai President Jaehoon Chang has also expressed concerns about Tesla’s 400-volt fast chargers not currently supporting the higher charging speeds that Hyundai’s 800-volt electrical architecture can achieve on other chargers.

Stellantis

According to a report by Reuters, Stellantis executives have confirmed that the company is considering adopting Tesla’s charge port. However, an official agreement has yet to be announced. In the U.S. market, Stellantis includes automakers such as Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Maserati, and Ram.

Volkswagen

Reuters has reported that Volkswagen is considering a deal with Tesla. If Volkswagen decides to adopt the NACS port, it would likely impact other brands under its umbrella, including Audi, Bentley, Bugatti, Porsche, and Lamborghini in the U.S. market.
